Course Description
My target audience consists of high school students, college students, or anyone else who wants or needs to learn calculus. A student who takes this course should have a decent background in algebra and trigonometry. I do not mind if a pupil is \'rusty\' when it comes to some of the concepts that he or she learned in these classes. However, if a student has forgotten a large portion of either algebra or trigonometry, a review of such concepts should be done before enrolling in this class.
A student should take my course because I am very detailed and I give many examples in order to enhance understanding. I avoid the trap of bogging students down with theory. For those students who want to see some theory, I have a few optional videos where I do proofs. I try not to skip steps involving algebra and I explain these steps carefully. My course is complete in that I cover easy and hard examples. A pupil who takes my course can check his or her understanding by downloading a 40 question quiz. The fact that this course can be completed in about one month is another incentive for enrollment.
My course is about limits. Limits comprise the very heart of calculus. As such, my first calculus course is about limits. The student should know the intuitive definition of the ordinary limit, one-sided limit, horizontal asymptote and infinite limit. He or she should learn how to compute the limits of various functions. Knowledge of the rigorous definition of the ordinary limit is not crucial but encouraged. The student should also know the intuitive definition of ordinary and one-sided continuity. The pupil should also know what it means for a function to be discontinuous at a point. Furthermore, he or she should be able to demonstrate discontinuity at a point by using one-sided limits.
My course begins with the concept of the ordinary limit. I then cover one-sided limits and their relationship to the ordinary limit. Limit laws are established next. I then cover continuity and extend many of the limit rules to the context of continuity. One-sided continuity and vapid continuity are subsequently discussed and we nod that many of the limit laws are valid for one-sided limits also. A similar nod is made for one-sided continuity. Using continuity, I then discuss what it means for a function to be discontinuous at a point. Next, I define horizontal asymptotes and establish Euler\'s number. I then proceed to discuss what it means for the limit of a function to equal infinity. This sets the stage for vertical asymptotes. We then discuss the liberties we can and cannot take with infinite limits. I finish the course by doing proofs for those who want to see them and by introducing students to the derivative concept, which will be important in future classes.
